Why Does My Child Have Temper Tantrums?

Tantrums generally occur when a young child becomes angry or frustrated. Common causes of anger or frustration in this age group include a tangible desire that is thwarted (i.e. Tommy wants a cookie.  Mom says no cookie) or task avoidance (i.e. Mom says it’s time for bed.  Tommy wants to stay up later).

Young children lack communication skills to express frustrated feelings so the feelings are expressed behaviorally.  Other factors contributing to tantrums include a child’s general disposition (some are more easy going than others), fatigue, and the stress level in the child’s environment.  In addition, children who have developmental, health or behavioral conditions are often more likely to exhibit tantrums and other behavioral problems.
